New Years Eve of 2025

GRIEF and December – the deadliest month

Just in December, alone, we’ve lost The Amazing Kreskin (mentalist often on Johnny Carson), basketball’s Dick Van Arsdale, baseball’s all time stolen base and best leadoff hitter Ricky Henderson (only 65), famed record producer Richard Perry , famed sports broadcaster Greg Gumbel (78), actress Olivia Hussy (73), President Jimmy Carter, actress Linda Levin, baseball’s golden era Cleveland Indians great Rocky Colavito – and that’s only the big headline ones. There have been 41 notable passages in total the month of December, 2024
With that in mind, A New York Rabbi gave a captivating sermon on the subject during the Jewish High Holidays we happened across that may be of interest to help especially those who have been affected recently- who have had difficulty with loss and grieving in their lives, as we have… whether it be personal loss or grieving the tragedies in Israel and beyond-and in tribute to those who have lost their lives and/or family members, or figurative loss.
I’m thankful for you (reading this)!
I may have fewer friends today than I did when I was younger, having lost many over the years, especially my dear brother and sister in their forties. And, with that in mind, today I’m all the more appreciative of what I do have. I no longer am obligated to go to large family gatherings that I could take or leave but now I can choose to go to those like this Thanksgiving dinner with good that I really want to attend . so thank you very much. I am grateful for you
And I am grateful to be alive and in generally good health while so many of my dear family and friends are no longer so fortunate. I miss them all so much and they are with me in my daily thoughts . I try to live my life with them in mind and for them too.
I will continue living each day as if it’s the last because we are not guaranteed anything and trying to make each day count. Now a senior, I started my first diary ever making sure to accomplish at least one thing of note everyday, whether volunteering, donating, etc. or just doing a good deed(s).
I wasn’t planning on doing anything for Thanksgiving because there really wasn’t anything I wanted to do including drive a distance to my remaining extended family but a good friend asked me at last minute to come for dinner. I grabbed the opportunity to be with like-minded folks for good food and conversation while giving thanks.
So thank you very much and hope this is just one of many more good times we ‘get together’ and savor our time on Earth
BE PREPARED FOR BOLD AGE (NOT OLD AGE)
Heed these words Bold friendđđ
You know the time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems like yesterday that I was young and embarking on my new life. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all those years went.
I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is… the winter of my life, and it catches me by surprise… How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those “older people” were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.
But, here it is…my friends are retired and getting grey… they move slower and I see an older person in myself now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me… but, I see the great change… Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant…but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore… it’s mandatory! Cause if I don’t on my own free will… I just fall asleep where I sit!
And so… now I enter this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I’m not sure how long it will last… this I know, that when it’s over on this earth… it’s over. A new adventure will begin!
Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done… things I should have done, but indeed, there are also many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime.
So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life, please do it quickly! Don’t put things off too long!! Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can TODAY, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not!
You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life… so, LIVE FOR TODAY and say all the things that you want ro your loved ones to remember and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!!
“Life” is a GIFT to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.
Remember: “It is Health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.”
NOW for some fun...
~Your kids are becoming you……but your grandchildren are perfect!
~Going out is good.. coming home is even better!
~You forget names… but it’s OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!!
~You realize you’re never going to be really good at anything…. especially golf.
~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don’t care to do them anymore.
~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It’s called “pre-sleep.”
~You miss the days when everything worked with just an “ON” and “OFF” switch.
~You tend to use more 4 letter words … “what?”…” when?”…???
~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it’s not safe to wear it anywhere.
~You notice everything they sell in stores is “sleeveless?!”
~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.
~Everybody whispers.
~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet…. 2 of which you will never wear.
~But “Old” is good in some things:
Old Songs, Old movies …
and best of all, our dear …OLD FRIENDS!! No, BOLD FRIEND!
Stay well, “BOLD FRIEND!”

Willie Nelson in his 20s (1950s) and now, 91 in 2024
WILLIE NELSON – CURRENTLY THE OLDEST MUSICIAN STILL TOURING – TALKS ABOUT MORTALITY AND STILL ‘ROCKING’ AT 91
(US Weekly , Nov 2024)
He may be 91, but Willie Nelson says he isnât concerned about his mortality.
The country singer shared his thoughts about dying in an interview with AP News on Friday, November 1.
âWell, Iâm 91 plus, so, you know, Iâm not worried about it,â he told the outlet. âI donât feel bad. I donât hurt anywhere. I donât have any reason to worry about dying . But I donât know anybody whoâs lived forever.â
He added, âI take pretty good care of myself. And I feel like Iâm in pretty good shape physically.â before joking, âMentally? Thatâs another story.â
Willie Nelson Receives Standing Ovation in 1st Performance Since Latest Health Scare
Nelson, who released his 153rd album, Last Leaf on the Tree, on Friday, November 1, also touched on what he hoped his legacy would be after his eventual passing.
âI had a good time. And I did what I came here to do: make music,â he said.
Itâs not the first time Nelson has reflected on the concept of aging. Heâs previously shared that he believes the secret to his longevity is a positive attitude.
“I appreciate everything I get and Iâve been lucky,â he told Forbes in April 2023. âIâm a little bit amazed that Iâm first of all still here, [And] Iâm having a good time. Iâm enjoying the singing, I think itâs good for me. People come up, right away, pay some money to come hear me or somebody sing, and itâs a great energy exchange out there and I look forward to it every time.â
The musician further divulged what he does day-to-day to contribute to a long life, during an interview with Parade in April 2023.
âYou have to do something every day to pay for the day,â Nelson told the outlet. âYou need to run, walk, swim, sing; whatever it is thatâs important to you, you have to do it and then see how long you can keep doing it.â
Meanwhile, he told Slate in December 2020 that he was surprised he was still alive past his 20s as he reflected on his youth.
âWell, when I was young, I was pretty dumb. And now that Iâm older, Iâm pretty fâing dumb. I donât know everything, and I think I do. So thereâs the problem,â he said. âI didnât ever think Iâd get this old. I always thought I was lucky to make it past 21.â
And while the veteran star has no plans to retire, he told People in May 2023 that he is slowing down the pace he does things.
“There’s probably other things I will do and can do, but I’m not going to push myself too hard,â he said. âI know one day it all ends, but I’m not rushing it.â

MAGIC FOOD

Wouldn’t it be amazing if one could snap his or her fingers and get any kind of food they want- and top quality, affordable, too.
Well, there’s a place in Lafayette Ca, where I live, that was last a decent sub sandwich shop and many other things before that.
Several months ago a new shop opened up called ‘Local Kitchens.’ I could have sworn it was a kitchen appliance store like the one that used to be across the street. So, I ignored the place for months until…
I read about some newish restaurants selling potato lakes, brisket and other delicacies in this last night of Hanukah. I’d already made an amazing discovery of ‘Revival’, in Berkeley, days earlier from same news article: maybe the best brisket and crispy latkes I’d ever had and in a beautifully renovated old building.
Wises and Sons deli was supposed to be open according to the article but their website said ‘closed’ but there was a referring address in Lafayette. As a good old journalist I was not one to ignore a lead
I was nearly resigned to cooking my own dinner but being nearby I thought I’d drive by the given Lafayette address.
Amazingly, this place was open and well lit.at 7 pm on a Sunday night . I parked in their lot not expecting much.
As I walked in the door good smells emanated and an ambience like something from the future . I’ve heard of new restaurants in places like Japan where there were no workers. ..well, that was the case here. There were no people to take orders but instead, just three kiosks with computer screens beaming pictures of attractive food including that of Wise and Sons Deli.
How could this little box of a place put out quality food from not only Wise and Sons but many other restaurants – and with no employees. At the kiosks You are instructed to key in your fave dishes and whatever ‘extras ‘ you want. There was not only Wise and Sons but menus from eight or nine other restuarants. How the hell do nine restaurants put on food in this little cracker jack box with no workers? I chose a pastrami Rueben sandwich, coleslaw and order of latkes . Total came to less than $25, for which I was instructed to pay by credit card with my phone. I could barely handle the ‘tech’. What would someone do here who wasn’t tech savvy?
Within seconds I was notified by text that my order would be ready in 10-15 minutes. Incredible, I thought. Was I really about to get a delicious deli dinner from this non-descript location seemingly devoid of people? Who was cooking the food and where were they cooking it. I’ll believe it when I see it. This is something from science fiction, I thought. If it works , great. But I had my doubts.
Another text…’your order ready in 5 minutes,’ then, sure enough, in exactly five minutes a bag of food appears out of nowhere in a small square opening. Then a voice announced my name and that my order was ready. A robot?
I got to my car and checked to make sure this was no joke and, yes, Charley, there was real, delicious food that I had ordered- food for which I might have had to otherwise travel to New York or Los Angeles to eat,- and at much more expensive prices!
Surreal , yes. On one hand I would have scoffed at impersonal ‘robot food’ but, no, after all, this is 2121 , well beyond 1984. Let’s leave it as a mystery how they do it and even offer up the address for your now very curious self to try. As an old Nostalgist maybe some things in this technological age today aren’t so bad.
This was the best dinner, along with the aforementioned Revival, that I had had in a long time and I didn’t have to drive far, wait long or leave a tip as I did at Revival. Perfectly timed for the pandemic, this type of restaurant may become a trend. Go now before the lines form.

Nine Important Facts to Remember as We Grow Older:
#9 Death is the number 1 killer in the world. #8 Life is sexually transmitted. #7 Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die. #6 Men have two motivations: hunger and sex, and they can’t tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich. #5 Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won’t bother you for weeks, months, maybe years. #4 Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing. #3 All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism. #2 In the 60’s, people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal. #1 Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow
All of us could take a Lesson
and ….On a more cheery note… Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. Grammar is important. For instance, commas save lives, such as in this example: “Let’s eat grandpa.” vs “Let’s eat, grandpa” We live by the Golden Rule. Those who have the gold make the rules.
